Sea freight containers

Ocean containers have a rectangular design and are made of durable corrugated thick steel. Also, all freight shipping containers have standard dimensions based on ISO. They must be able to carry cargo safely over long distances and have a high bearing capacity. Also, at the edge of each door, there is a rubber gasket that prevents material from leaking out and moisture from entering.

In your freight process, you can use two types of new or second-hand freight shipping containers. Overall, their useful life for sailing is between 10 to 12 years. They are waterproof and windproof but they are not safe from rust. Naturally, its resistance is less than the new one.

Note that the shipping containers must have the year of manufacture and the CSC label. We are CSC certified and we can put you in touch with international freight agents who can arrange this for you.

The BIC code is for containers in the international freight forwarding chain. This code, as a prefix, is placed before the number of each one. Thus, if yours is lost or stolen, you can use it to identify your container.

They are available in different sizes for moving any kind of goods.

Freight shipping container sizes

You can move any kind of goods, from weapons to bulk grains, by sea shipping containers. They have different types such as: 20 ft dry shipping container, 40 ft flat rack, 20 ft open top and 40 ft refrigerated. Also, some of them have ventilation. They are known as coffee containers because they are often used to carry coffee. Every company should use containers that comply with ISO standards. These also have two main sizes:

Standard container: 8′ wide by 8’6″ high and 20′ or 40′ in length → max Gross Weight=3048 kg

High cube container: 8′ wide by 9’6″ high with length up to 53′

With 20 ft container you can move furniture, washing machine, TV and other appliances of a two-bedroom house. It can hold 33 cubic meters and also 10 standard pallets or 11 Euro pallets on its floor.

The space of 40 ft container is double. It can move cars and appliances of a four-bedroom house and hold 67 cubic meters.

You can also use these freight shipping containers in FCL or LCL. The first one is faster, safer but the latter is cheaper and suitable for small goods.

Which size freight shipping containers do I need?

In this regard, you need to consider three weights to choose the best size for your cargo:

  • Its weight without cargo (Tare Weight)
  • The weight of cargo alone
  • The combined weight of cargo and container (Gross Weight)

Also, this standardization means that no matter how far you are from your goods, the freight forwarding company or supplier can easily place it in the right container. This variety of dimensions also makes a difference in rates and costs.

Rate and costs of sea freight container

You do not need to buy a container for your freight forwarding. Your supplier or your freight forwarder company will provide it for you.

The average rate of a new 20′ ft container is about 2,000 (GBP). The used one is 1500 (GBP) or less. Also the average rate of a new 40′ ft container is 3000 (GBP) and the used one is 2000 (GBP).

But keep in mind that overall costs depend on a number of factors such as:

  • Destination port
  • Insurance
  • The type of freight forwarding
  • weight and volume of good
  • customs clearance

For information on updated rates of freight containers to different ports, worldfreightrates is the best source. For example, a 20′ ft container from the UK to New York port costs € 1,576 (GBP). Or the rate from the US to the Montreal port is $ 2,133 (USD).

Inter modal freight

In this type of freight forwarding, using the steel freight shipping containers with standardized, goods do not need to be unloaded and loaded to be transferred from ship to land. Thus, it maintains the safety of the good and reduces the risk of damage.

Air freight containers

A Unit Load Device (ULD) transports air freight cargo. It has two forms: pallet or container. ULD pallets are robust aluminum plates with hooks. ULD containers are closed boxes made of aluminum or a combination of aluminum (frame) and plastic (walls). Also each has different standard dimensions. Here some of the air container and pallet:
